How to Choose a Home Remodeler

By Cahil Design Build
April 22, 2015

So you want to remodel your home. Whether that means a major kitchen renovation or a minor cabinetry upgrade, many homeowners find the process stressful. The right home remodeler will ensure that the final outcome is worthwhile and will make the process as easy on you as possible.

We recommend you look at:

  1. Experience. Having a home remodeling contractor you can trust and that has skill and experience can make the design-build process that much easier on you and your family. Be sure to ask about certifications, awards, trade association memberships, and examples of their previous work to ensure you make the best choice.
  2. Price. Check out the costs of a few different contractors to see if there are any outliers. Remodelers that are drastically under or overcharging may not complete the project to your liking or at all. Keep in mind as well that the estimate should be provided after an assessment of your home and a discussion about your project—on-the-spot price quoting can be a warning sign of a shady contractor.
  3. Recommendations and referrals. The best home remodeler can provide you with several referrals and will have reviews on the Internet. Word-of-mouth is also a good place to start your search.
  4. Licensing and insurance. Make sure the workers are covered so that you aren’t liable should anyone get injured on the job. Liability insurance can also help protect your property from any potential damage during the remodeling process.
  5. Contracts. Everything should be written out to ensure your best interests are protected. Your contract should include a timeline, materials/products and warranties, and a preliminary budget. It may also include information regarding cleanup and should be signed by both you and your contractor.

Meeting with your home remodeler in person will give you the opportunity to ask them about experience, awards, licensing, and insurance and can help you determine whether they are easy to talk to.

This is also a good time to watch out for warning signs. Unscrupulous contractors may use high-pressure sales tactics, offer no proof of insurance or experience, or attempt to scare you into signing on quickly by making big claims about the condition of your house.
